As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

lights in good condition, headlights driven back on the radiator of the car back, and the rod on the left hand side of the car broken down, right close to the manifold outlet; manifold outlet bent in the middle just close to the rear wheels at the end of the car. That's about all the marks, because the body, the top being all broken up. That's about all. Mr Cowan;- You were there when the jury were down? A;- Yes. Q;- Were the brakes applied when the men were shoving the car along? You saw the way two or three men could shove the car along the bridge? A;- I have forgotten I think to mention that the handle of the emergency was pulled back pas past the last notch in the second round. Q;- Did you take off the wheels? A;- No. Q;- But you can testify as to the emergency brake not appearing to work, and the footbrake did appear to work, that's about all? A;- Yes. Q;- You didn't examine the drums of the hind wheels? A;- Not after hoisint it. Q;- You didn't jack up the hind part of the machine and test the brakes that way? A;- Just in putting the brakes on, putting pressure on the car. Q;- So that if one of these brakes, that is, one of these footbrakes on one of the hind wheels did not work, you would not know? A;- Well, I would know if onw footbrake was working. Q;- Still they had sufficient traction to prevent you moving the car? A;- The brake was working on the hind wheels, but as I am not clear, I could not give any evidence. Q;- It was hilding on one wheel? A;- I could not give any evidence at all. Q;- So that an expert who came along here and made a test of
