As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- What would be your inference as to the speed of the car in retracted in not doing that? A;- I have no idea of the speed. Mr Ladner;- But the weight of the car, there was in that car twelve people, what effect would the application of the emergency brake, to strain, would it be in the same position as before the accident? A;- I see no reason why it should not be. Q;- These are very wet- A;- I understand the brakes are, Q;- Do you think that the strain on the emergency brake on that car can be figured out? A;- Not in the least, a good car would hold thirteen or fourteen people. Q;- Was that emergency brake touched or moved before the jury got there? A;- No. Q;- You remember the car was taken from the left hand side to the right hand side of the road? A;- We moved it over. Q;- Before the car was moved was the brake touched? A;- Oh, we tested the emergency brake. Q;- Before the car was moved or handled, moved up and down there Q;- That is before you crossed from one side to the other, before that time had the emergency been touched? A;- No.
