Aug 21. News came today that Brussels had fallen to the Germans & later that a big victory over the French troups had taken place somewhere between [Uetz] & Vogesen(?) The city decorated with flags, church bells rung & in evening crowds cheering, singing national songs & hymns etc. Partial eclipse of the sun. Japan has sent an ultimatum to Germany to remove her ships from Kaichou (Aug 15?)

Aug 22. Bismarck, Germania and other "denkenals" decorated with flowers & wreaths etc. & crowds in streets in eve. singing in honour of yesterdays victory over the French. At Warrens in p.m. Walking with Muriel Cator in eve
