14. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSAULTING TROOPS.

The instructions contained in 3.3.135, XXVI, XXVII and XXVIII must be fully explained to all ranks taking part in the assault.

15. DRESS AND EQUIPMENT.

As per S.S.135, Section XXXI, para. 1.

Distinguishing marks as per S.S.135, Section XXXII, para II.

16. LIGHT SIGNALS.

(I) S.O.S. The Corps S.O.S. signal is RED, either rockets or Very lights, as many as possible being fired in rapid succession. In addition, heavy rifle or N.G. fire breaking out at any time after the GREEN Line has been captured will be trusted as an S.O.S. signal.

(II) CAPTURE OF OBJECTIVES.

As soon as the BLUE and GREEN Lines respectively have been captured, three WHITE Very lights will be fired by the assaulting troops as a signal to show that they have reached their objectives. These signals will only be fired by orders of Os.C. Assaulting Companies.

17. COMMUNICATIONS.

Telephones and Power Buzzers.

Before Zero hour the buried cable will be extended from Brigade Headquarters (M.11.a.6.1.) to M.5.d.3.3. and M.12.b.5.2. approximately. From the former, overland lines will be run to the 22nd and 26th Battn. Headquarters, and from the latter to the 24th and 25th Battn. Headquarters. Lateral lines will also be run connecting these Headquarters.

A Power Buzzer will be installed at the 22nd Battn. H.Q. with amplifier at the 26th Battn. Headquarters (call CBF) to ensure communication back through the shelled area around FOSSE 12. A second power buzzer will be available to be carried forward to the First of Second Objective, if the earth is sufficient damp to make it probable that signals can be transmitted so great a distances. Power buzzer messages will be sent three times to ensure that they are received correctly.

The O.P. in FOSSE 11 de LEHS will be connected to Brigade Headquarters by telephone.

Visual Signalling.

The Battalion Signal Section will carry visual apparatus as follows:–

1 Lucas Lamp. 1 Flapper per man, hung on belt.

A Brigade O.P. (call FS) for receiving visual messages from the First Objective will be established at FOSSE 11 de Lens, and lamps should be focussed upon the end of the FOSSE building. From this O.P. it is not possible to see the final objective, and an attempt will be made to locate an O.P. in the vicinity of the Generating station, M.35.b., to cover this area.

All visual messages will be sent three times – DD, DD.

Banners.

Four Banners per Company will report to Battalion H.Q., two after the Companies are in their first Assembly positions, and two after they are in their forward positions.

Calls. After Zero hour, position calls will be discontinued, and the Battle calls of Brigade and Battalions will be used.

18. Rations. Extra Rations for the operations will be carried. Details to follow. Extra water at the rate of 16 petrol tins per Company will be carried. Water in limited quantity at M.12.a.8.6. Good will at M.11.d.35.40. Coy. Commanders will arrange for a hot drink to be issued before moving from first Assembly position.

19. TRENCH MUNITIONS.

The Main Divisional Dump is being established at R.21.d.8.5. (BOULETTE WOOD DUGOUTS).
