As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

that if you put a stone wall, something of that kind, don't you think he was going too fast? A;- No; I don't think he was going too fast; if they put red lights on them gates to show. Juror;- Did you see this man called Jim; Mr Smith saw him before you did? You didn't see him at all? A;- No; he was walking on the lefthand side of the road. Q;- A;- He was not walking in front of our car. Q;- Do you think Mr Smith could see plainer than you could? A;- He was in a position to see better than me. Q;- Did this man called Jim have to run to catch up or id he have to board it from behind? A;- I could not say. Mr Smith stopped the car, for the the gentleman, and put his hand back to open the door, Q;- Mr Smith seemed to have no trouble in stopping the car and stopped quite closely? A;- Yes. Q;- You said he was running a little faster than on the bridge A;- I did not say so. Q;- You were running just as fast on the road as on the bridge? A;- He was running very slow because the road was rough. Q;- Was that before you came to the house on the right hand side of the road, and that piece of road was rough there? A;- Yes. Q;- Road had been rough previous to reaching there? A;- Yes. You know there is quite a few holes in the road, and in coming along it almost become a crawl. Q;- Run about half the speed on the road as they did on the plank? A;- Yes, I could have got off the car at any place, standing on the running board between the plank road and the bridge. Mr Donaghy;- Do you know the exact time you left Ladner's? A;- six o'clock. Q;- How do you know?
