As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

A;- Well, there is no question; if you can, why go to it, even at sixty miles an hour. Q;- Then it is your opinion that Smith had some right to? A;- I could not say positively, if the other automobiles slowed up just the same as Smith was that night, Mr Donaghy;- He was going across at fifteen miles an hour. Have you ever gone over this bridge in the daytime before? A;- Yes. Q;- In a jitney? A;- Yes. Q;- What speed? A;- About the same speed as that night,- ten or fifteen, Q;- When had you gone over before this night? A;- I went over last just a month before the accident. Q;- In what jitney? A;- In the same jitney. Q;- At fifteen miles an hour? A;- I would not swear to it, that it was fifteen. Q;- Who was driving? A;- Mr Smith. Q;- What time of the day? In the forenoon of the afternoon? A;- In the forenoon. Q;- Had you gone over on any other occasion with Mr Smith? A;- Oh yes. Q;- Several occasions? A;- Yes. Q;- This fall? A;- Yes; I had a return ticket. Q;- Did you ever come back with him in the jitney? A;- Yes. Q;- What time? A;- Came back generally in the afternoon. Q;- Did you ever come back in the evening? A;- In the afternoon, came back in the evening. but not for two years. Q;- On all these other occasions you had gone over the bridge at fifteen miles an hour? A;- Generally about the same.
