My dearest Mother

There are two letters from you awaiting my answer both written about the date of my birthday.

In one of them you sent me 2 five dollar bills as a birthday present. It was very dear of you to deny yourself like that but you really should not do so. My pay in ample for all my needs especially since I have been made a captain and you, I know, have need for money on every hand.

The gardens of Victoria must be very lovely
