As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- Have you given a full report to the jury today? A;- Yes. Q;- Have you made a written report to anyone? A;- No. Q;- Can you find anything defective on that car which you can attribute to the shock of the accident? A;- I don't know of anything. Coroner;- Just examined the condition of the brakes? A;- Yes; the condition of the brakes Q;- In moving that car they certainly exercised some pressure to do it? You don't know how if was moved there? A;- I was not there at the moving. Q;- Do you know of any lifting pressure that strained the rods underneath the car? A;- I don't think. Q;- Is it so or not? A;- I don't know. Q;- No injury could be caused by the sling or cable passing under it? A;- The sling under it? Q;- The effect on the rods underneath the car? Now you understand what I mean? Did you examine it? A;- I examined it. Q;- Would the strain effect any of the roads passing beneath the car? A;- Q;- Do you know how this car was lifted or raised? A;- No; I never saw the sling on the car at all. Q;- What would be the proper gear for it to operate, to run on a level road? A;- High gear. Q;- Making an emergency stop would you take it out of high gear? A;- No. Q;- If you had been confronted with this emergency what would you have done as driver? A;- Applied the brakes. Q;- What brakes? A;- I would use the foot brakes, the best brake to apply.
