As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;p He doesn't have a full view of the road - take a red light, you naturally feel you go slow. What I am telling you, when there's a lamp in place at the time, a man could not see the light on account of the bridge swinging? A;-He can see the red light when he is standing still. Q;- He can actually see the lamp at all times? A;-Yes. Q;-When do you clean these lamps? A;-Whenever they require 9t, anytime I see they are wanted; sometimes I do that during the day, sometimes I pass them up. Q;- Sometimes you let them go? A;-That doesn't do on the bridge. A;- No; I cleaned it last night. Coroner;- You cleaned that lamp that is in the center of the bridge before lighting it last night? A;- No, I did that on Saturday night.
