the propellers. The purpose of these machines is to attack and destroy enemy "scouts," thus protecting our two-seaters who are engaged on other work, or to destroy enemy two-seaters which may be observing for artillery, taking photographs, reconnoitring or bombing.

Our Flight Commander is running the squadron as the Major is away on two weeks' leave. I am now acting flight commander and am kept pretty busy. Still I like it. It is far nicer leading a formation over the lines than just being one of the formation. You have to think for yourself in everything but you don't have to try and think with someone else.
