the propellers. The purpose of these machines is to attack and destroy enemy "scouts," thus protecting our two-seaters who are engaged on other work, or to destroy enemy two-seaters which may be observing for artillery, taking photographs, reconnoitring or bombing.

Our Flight Commander is running the squadron as the Major is away on two weeks' leave. I am now acting flight commander and am kept pretty busy. Still I like it. It is far nicer leading a formation over the lines than just being one of the formation. You have to think for yourself in everything but you don't have to try and think with someone else. As I have been out here about six months and have had considerable experience I am quite confident that
