was talking with MacDonald about the time he & I were sent to dig a communication trench to the captured German trench at Richebourg L'Avoue' last May - how we waded in mud knee deep & had to lie in the long grass two hours, shivering with cold , because the Germans were wise to us & were continually sending up flares and "rapid fire" -- I was chilled to the bone as I had no greatcoat. That was the night we couldn't get the trench 'down' on account of water & the buried German dead of last fall. Ugh.
