Monday July 18th

Blazing hot all day and plagued by hordes of 'blue bottles' - I am cook and achieve marvelous results by combining "Maconchie" CM & V Ration. "Bully" & Peasoup Tablets. Order comes to cut niches for rifles - I get jumped on for telling Lieutenant that rifles, bayonets fixed in niches will be dangerous in case a wiring party has to suddenly come in over the parapet.

- Am told "Wiring parties have proper means of entrance" Common sense & shrapnel to the contrary"

Tuesday July 19th

Pretty jaded and tired on account of insufficient sleep - & can't sleep well when off guard in daytime on of account heat and flies.

- Germans throw 4 shrapnel '250' to over left - Get one of our company - Thru the knee

- Am on water fatigue & meet the stretcher bearers packing him out - Very cheerful - "Got a Blightie one"

Much fusillading to our left and right tonight
