Septr. Very trying day - About 55 miles in bad lorries in dust & heat over bad roads.

9, Sund. ARRAS shelled at intervals during the night with 11 HV - Very disturbing - one only just short. Heavy rain showers. Hearad that Major Frank Gull DSO MC had been killed in action FAUDREUIL

10. Showery. Visited Maj WM Maclean 2q" being seriously wounded by bullet at 7ces LIGNY FLOCHELLE. (He died in Eng. in March).

12. FECM at 4th C&B - went to Adv. Hqrs to see Col Montagne

13. FECM cont'd Col Hastings of West Riding Rgmt (Commandant of ARRAS) dined with us. He told us of Java Malaya & India & much about ARRAS - Also that Lt FURZEY , an Irish priest, was sent from Borough Cas. near Yarmouth to ARRAS. That he travelled with oxen & stopped at "des BOEUFS" of [illegible] fame.

14. Went to LIGNY FLOCHELLE again but found that Maj Maclean had gone. Maj. Wilmot & Capt Preston lunched with us.
