27 Bn Trench 3/4 Oct Midnight

At 8 pm I sent message asking for stretcher bearers, a guide & water but have received no answer. Have three bad stretcher cases & two other casualties. Have [illegible] continuously and closely shelled and are now under heavy machine gun fire.

Wounded guide informs me that chalk trench we are now in was held by 27 Bn supports and if followed out will lead to road on which is bombing post from which Vancouver trench starts. As it is impossible to proceed shall endeavour to withdraw at 2.30 pm if shelter.

Have 2q O.R. in trench less gunners taking his mess.
