Dear Lindley,

In writing to Nell I have mentioned that I am finding it very hard to write now.

It is a mental state due largely to mud. We get so that mud is our atmosphere. We literally task mud all the time - There was the same effect on the Somme but we recovered. Now we can expect nothing else for the whole winter & we lack the mental stimulant of great risk trench fighting - As a result we have more hospital cases, curiously enough principally among the latest comers.

A letter from you chatty & breezy full of the little bits of news that mean so much has come as an excellent antidote.

One's digestion gets quite out of order due I think to the deep dug out life but in each series of tours of duty we get a short period of above ground life but no recreation.
