I believe it is almost definitely settled that we are to leave here next Sunday for England though vague rumours float about in the most extra-ordinary way and one doesn't know what to believe.
It probably won't come as news to you that there was serious mishap here a week ago in which the Blanchard Hotel (Kaiserhof) was wrecked also the German Club and Simon Leiser's Wholesale house was broken into and he is claiming $35,000 damages from the Dominion Government because soldiers were mixed up among the rioters. In order to stop further rioting sharp detachments of the C.M.R.s and 48th Battalion have been on duty each night until tonight and general leave was cancelled. Tonight however the situation seems to be well in hand and general leave has been granted with the result that practically the whole Battalion are out on leave and as we were paid this afternoon which probably return in various states of exhilaration. I'm in tonight as I am taking Company Orderly Sergeants work for the evening for a man who is going to a dance.
Personally we cannot leave here too soon as I am anxious to see my people in the old country and also I suppose foolishly anxious to get into Belgium to help to do my bit at the game that you are now playing - by all accounts the grimmest game that it ever fell to the lot of man to play but I believe it is a tradition of the British troops
