Tuesday November 2nd

Still drizzling and cold - spend two hours trying to get my pay book fixed up- French Canadian Corps P.M too busy gambling with other officers- Fine army we have - Finally go straight to Col. Mitchell & get a peremptory note which brings up the P.M at the double. Get my warrant from QM. Sergt Maj Pennie (who used to live with the Forbes at Lacha Hache). Fixing up trench maps in my spare time - Lieut. Vernon tells me Gen. Armstrong is so set against me because of Leekie producing my map & accusing the C.E.'s of incompetency. Vernon says if nothing comes of my efforts in England, he will write to a high officer at GHQ (French) about me. Get away from work at 8 pm - A.M.C. Staff Srgt hunts me up at the billet - produces a smashed doll's head - sent him from Canada for a little girl in Dieppe - wants me
