Wednesday Oct 13th 1915

Neal goes off on leave to England. Have an evening 'at home' and get a French, English conversation class started. Lessons to be "Tous les deux soins". Operations - Can. Corps carried out a smoke demonstration along whole front in afternoon-Artillery cut wire at selected points 2 pm - 330, then smoke was started then a bombardment of enemy trenches combined with rifle & MG fire commenced-smoke very effective, completely obscuring enemy trenches for half an hour. Enemys were from Douve River was examined & specimens taken, party remaining out all pm within 25 yds of enemy parapet-enemy apparently keep a poor look-out as cover could not be obtained all the time. Artillery - the German artillery shelled practically the whole Canadian Front NiMidland Farm & Plus Douve
