London & Newbury

March 1915

March to Downs & practice attack & defense by turn. In afternoon bayonet drill & squad drill.

To town with Bennett in evening on late pass. Take in picture show.

Route march in morning. Inoculated & vaccinated in afternoon. Leave for London 4:30. Met at Charing Cross by Elliott brothers. Dinner "National Club" very fine building. To Sidcup (15miles ) & spend night at youngest brothers. Nice people. Very pretty little girl Joan, 2¾.

Arrive at Cannon St next morning , by taxi through the city to Charing Cross, meet Mifo Elliott, go to Reading, where we change.

Thames at Maidenhead hardly 100 feet wide, arrive Newbury 11:30, Elliott family most hospitable, old house. In afternoon over Donnington Castle (Chaucer lived here) was held at Battle of Newbury, town museum very old oak-panelled building with relics of Newbury Battles (1643-4). House party in evening.

Sunday to old Congregational church, in afternoon motor to Reading. London 7 pm, see Embankment Parliament, Trafalgar Sq. & attend service Westminster Abbey
