Preface.

Camp:

Ho! Ho! It doth appear The Piemen are already here. Let them stand forth and make quite clear The drift of their proposed intentions And show the fruit of their inventions. Who Stand as spokesmen for the Piemen?

Editors:

As all the Piemen Are modest, shy men We speak for the Piemen.

Piemen:

The Editors shall speak. Since honest Piemen Are modest, shy men, The Editors shall speak.

Camp:

Of late the cruel Gods have fated That pris'ners must be educated; And thus we readily surmise You come to teach or sermonize.

Editors:

Your ready surmise Is a painful surprise; Quite groundless and false your deductions We come not as teachers, Nor even as preachers And care not a rap for instruction

Piemen:

Not as teachers or preachers; And we pity poor creatures Who suffer so much from instruction.

Editors:

We're poets and gleemen

Piemen:

(But honest as seamen)

Editors:

We're artists and wits as well; Our scribes, in their humours, Will please all Consumers, For each a fine story will tell.

Camp:

Since you have come to banish cares, We are inclined to taste your wares; And, though the Piemen say they're shy, Bid them be bold and bring their Pie.

Editors:

Your kind attitude Our deep gratitude Most surely compels -

Piemen:

But indeed, With our limitations, Your high expectations We hardly dare hope to exceed.

Editors and Piemen:

We're poets and gleemen, (But honest as seamen), We're artists and wits as well; Our scribes, in their humours, Will please all Consumers, For each a fine story will tell. C.
