Oct 10 King Carlos of Romania died.

Oct 12 Letter from Bob, written on board Str. entering S.F. harbour announcing his engagement to Marion Phinney

Oct 13 As a Sample of German "nerve" the following is typical. A Ger. aeroplane flew over Paris today dropping "A Warning as follows Frenchmen you are being deceived. The Germans are victorious. Beware of English perfidity."

Oct 19 Sun. Walked through "Jahrmarkt' in eve. One might think it was Xmas eve. Crowds of people in streets & round booth with parcels & packages. Children with baloons & blowing toy trumpets etc. Not a sign of war to be seen
