rifles full of flowers and their sweethearts & wives & friends with them. They were loaded with presents & flowers. The decorations in some of the shop windows are not exactly calculated to cheer one. There are figures in deep mourning, hats trimmed with crepe etc. etc.

Aug 27. Several people recd. letters from America. Toltie got one from Edith fr England. At a vestry meeting in eve. Thunder lightning & rain in p.m. Called on the Warrens.

Aug 29. Craul arrested this a.m but let go a few hours later. The probable reason is that he is a civil engineer. At Meiers to dinner. Walking with
