Saw the D.C.L.I. & back to DUISANS. Called on Capt Thomas. Applied for leave from May 24th to June 2nd. Advised to remain tight. Saw front tanks at MONTENNISCOURT. Heavy shelling at night & very rainy & cloudy. Flashes very clear. Wrote D.A.S. also Paymaster.

May 20th (Sunday). Very hot. Went with Lieut Wilcocks to ARRAS to Field Cashier. Drew Frs 120 for washing also Frs 23-40 what the Paymaster owes me 16/10. From there we walked on the ARRAS-CAMVRAIE Rd to TILLOY to look for the grave of young Dowe? The country is awful, nothing but chalets, trenches, shell holes, dugouts & a mass of ruins & entanglements for miles & miles. We saw plenty of Bosch shells bursting & Air fighter. On our way back we stopped at SCHRAMM barracks ARRAS where I saw the C.S.M. Dugdale of A Coy 13th KRR who was with poor Dowe when he was killed. He was 12 yards in front of his Coy when a shell burst near him right in MONCHY village. He put up a splendid fight & he is burried alright. Wilcocks vows he will
