April 25th An extremely busy day. Packed up & my men marched to DUISANS in the front area of the great ARRAS battle. Very heavy unspeakably intense bombardment on. Very nice day but an awful lot of chalk dust. Lt Peterson all right. My Company altogether. Saw Capt Thomas busy in Orderly Room with two prisoners, one of whom I regret to say I had to give 14 days Field Imprisonment to. No 1 for not his second offence in not complying with an order & the other one I had to fine 14 days pay. Wrote poor M.

April 26th. Very busy all day. Saw one of our Observation balloons come down in flames at a great height, hit by German machine gun explosive bullets from either an airship or Tank. Wrote MAR & sent photos. Rather quiet during day but heavy bombardment about 9:30 P.M. Rumors of a great battle.

April 27th Went into ARRAS with 2nd Lieut Peterson. Drew 3150 francs for
