walked to Beaufort & saw the Adjt - caught a motor lorry to Estree-Wamin Town - Major Lieu Sykes came into lunch with us. I opened a tin of Greys cigarettes the last one of eights & found in it the attached - Wrote her same day. About 6:30 P.M. a huge explosion & unofficially reported that the German air craft dropped a big bomb on one of our big naval guns going to Arras.

Jan 10th Heavy firing going on - hear guns very plainly. Went to Liencourt & Grandcourt - back to tea then motored with Webb to Ivergny & then to Frevent - back to dinner. Received two cables & a letter from Mrs Opel A Thomas & a letter from Father.

Jan 11th Went into Avesnes - saw Capt Thomas then called on Capt Leon & had a cup of tea - then to the Officers Club - drew 2000 francs from Field Cashier - after tea motored to Avesnes with Webb; after dinner
