sounding the alarm was more exciting than the fire. The battery fired their first shot on Thursday. We were rolled out of bed at 4 o'clock. The range is about five miles from camp. All the officers with red trimmings were around examining everything. I am not on a gun crew but was a couple of hundred yards in the rear.
The weather is fine. It is not very hot and rains every now and again
