Dearest Mother & Father

Your awfully welcome letter of the 31st arrived this morning. It just about breaks my heart to think of all the hard luck and burdens that are falling on your shoulders. I would give any thing to be able to help. I will send every penny I can. I guess I will have to go to London and interview the Chief Paymaster about sending an assignment to you. They are awfully strict about money now days. I should have done it before.
