tried to get him to fix me up so that I could stay over there. I thought I had succeeded, but the sequel shows otherwise. I stayed there that night and met several men I knew including Dr. Gibson, who went out with the 7th. Next day I was sent to the 2nd C.M.R. at "Villers au Bois". I arrived there on 20 March and was attached to A Coy. I didn't like the colonel. He is a new CO who was only promoted to rank of Lt. Col. the week before and "felt" his position very much, and tried to make everyone else "feel" it too. Anyhow he wasn't a gentleman.

I liked the other officers very much however. Some of them were pretty rough, but diamonds, for all that. The whole division (3rd) had been out practising for the big push (Vimy Ridge) for the past 6 weeks, and the next day A Coy went up into the front line, whilst C Coy went into the supports with B and D Corp relieving us of the end of 48 hrs. It was a new line to the Battn, but they have been studying the position from maps for weeks past.

I wonder if you'd like me to give a description of my tour and what my impressions were. You've probably heard hundreds of others and will be bored with this. Anyhow you can always skip it.

I enjoyed every minute of it and would give anything to still be out there. I wonder why it is that so many men who didn't want to go and who are married and got loads of children have been sent over, whilst I remain behind footling for a year in England. I suppose its a punishment for some of my many sins.
