and at the present moment the Huns are giving us taste of big guns to keep us warm.

I have been very lucky so far but then one or two very close shaves, one smashed my rifle just by my face, my cap was shot through, my water bottle turned another and I got a crack on the wrist from a piece of shrapnel which did not do much damage. You get quite used to rifle fire and forget to duck but with shell fire she is quite different. It is not the effect of the shell but the noise that gets on one nerve, and that noise goes on day and night.
