Hymn 353 For National Occasions "And all the people shouted, and said, 'God save the King.'" - 1 Sam. x. 24.

God save our gracious King, Long live our noble King, God save the King; Send him victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over us; God save the King.

Thy choicest gifts in store On him be pleased to pour; Long may he reign; May he defend our laws, And ever give us cause To sing with heart and voice, God save the King.

Our loved Dominion bless With peace and happiness From shore to shore; And let our Empire be United, loyal, free, True to herself and Thee For evermore. Amen

"Oh, our God, our eyes are upon Thee, The battle is not ours, but God's." - 2 Chron. 20, 12, 15, "The Lord saveth, not with sword and spear, for the battle is the Lord's." - 1 Sam. 17, 47

Exhortation

A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation after the Minister.

Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against thy holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done, and there is no health in us; But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable offenders, spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults, restore thou them that are penitent, according to Thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord: and grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous and sober life, to the glory of Thy holy name. Amen.

Hymn 566

"Lord, Thou has been our refuge from one generation to another." Ps. xc. 1.

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come. Our shelter from the stormy blast, And our eternal home!

Beneath the shadow of Thy throne Thy saints have dwelt secure; Sufficient is Thine arm alone, And our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood, Or earth received her frame, From everlasting Thou art God, To endless years the same.

A thousand ages in Thy sight Are like an evening gone; Short as the watch that ends the night Before the rising sun.

Time, like an ever-rolling stream, Bears all its sons away; They fly, forgotten, as a dream Dies at the opening day.

O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come; Be Thou our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home! Amen.

Collects

Litany for War

Hymn 358

"Beware lest thou forget the Lord thy God." - Deut. viii. 11

God of our fathers, known of old, Lord of our far-flung battle line, Beneath Whose awful hand we hold Dominion over palm and pine; Lord God of hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget.

The tumult and the shouting dies; The captains and the kings depart; Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice, An humble and a contrite heart; Lord God of hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget, lest we forget.

Far called our navies melt away, On dune and headland sinks the fire, Lo, all our pomp of yesterday Is one with Ninevah and Tyre; Judge of the nations, spare us yet, Lest we forget, lest we forget.

If, drunk with sight of power, we loose Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe, Such boastings as the Gentiles use, Or lesser breeds without the law; Lord God of hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget, lest we forget.

For heathen heart that puts her trust In reeking tube and iron shard; All valiant dust that builds on dust, And guarding calls not Thee to guard; For frantic boast and foolish word Thy mercy on Thy people, Lord. Amen

Sermon Collection for War Fund Hymn 507

"A man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest." - Isa. xxxii, 2.

Jesu, lover of my soul, Let me to Thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high; Hide me, O my Saviour, hide, Till the storm of life is past; Safe into the haven guide, O receive my soul at last.

Other refuge have I none, Hangs my helpless soul on Thee; Leave, ah! leave me not alone, Still support and comfort me; All my trust on Thee is stayed; All my help from Thee I bring; Cover my defenceless head With the shadow of Thy wing.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want; More than all in Thee I find; Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick, and lead the blind. Just and holy is Thy Name; I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am; Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plentous grace with Thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound. Make and keep me pure within; Thou of life the fountain art, Freely let me take of Thee; Spring Thou up within my heart. Rise to all eternity. Amen.
