29tTH (VANCOUVER) BATTALION. CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE.

RESTRICTIONS FOR THE OFFENSIVE – No. 1, JULY 26TH, 1917.

Reference Name: 1/10,000 LENS Sheet.

1/10,000 RESERVOIR HILL Sheet.

1. In accordance with 6th C.I.B. Instructions for the Offensive Nos. 1 and 2, and 5th C.I,B, Operation Order No. 155, the following instructions are issued.

2. With a view to forcing the enemy to evacuate LENS, the Canadian Corps have been ordered to capture HILL 70. The attack will be carried out by the 2nd Canadian Division on the Right and the last Canadian Division on the Left, at a time to be notified later. The 2nd Canadian Division attack will be carried out by the 4th C.I.B. on the Right, and the 5th Ci.I.B., with 29th Battn. attached, on the left. The 5th C.I.B. less the 29th Battn., will be in Divisional Reserve. The 2nd C.I.B. will be on the immediate left of the 2nd Canadian Division.

3. BOUNDARIES. The boundaries of the 5th C.I.B. will be as follows:–

Northern Boundary. A straight line from N.3.a.4.4. to junction of NELSON Trench and NASH ALLEY. B.l.d.15.80 (exclusive). Railway junction N.6.a.75.75 (inclusive). Junction of MARTYR’S ALLEY and MOUSE Trench N.6.d.05.60 (inclusive). Thence along old German Support Line (inclusive) to DOUBLE CRASSIER at N.5.c.15.20. Thence along present Northern Boundary.

Southern Boundary. Junction of COMMOTION and CARFAX Trenches, N.S.b.2.6. – along CARFAX and CONTROL Trenches to junction of CONTROL and present German front line at N.7.b.25.20. (All of the above inclusive to 4th C.I.S.) Thence Road Junction R.7.a.35.10 – Junction of MARTYR’S ALLEY and CORAL, M.12.b.95.35 – thence Road Junction N.12. b.45.50 – Junction of COMET and COSSACK N.11.b.70.75 – along COSSACK Trench (inclusive to 4th C.I.B.) to junction with COCKSCOMB, M.11.c.3.4. – along COCKSCOMB (inclusive to 4th C.I.B.) to Railway at N.10.d.95.95.

The boundaries between the 5th C.I.B. Right and Left attacking Battalions will be :– NUN’S ALLEY at B.2.d.4.5. where Railway cuts NUN’S ALLEY, thence westerly to n.2.c.5.3.– thence to road at N.1.d.95.15. – thence in straight line to junction of COOTER Trench and road at B.1.c.40,00 – thence to Road crossing at M.6.d.90.00 along Southern part of Road to N.12.b.60.85.

4. OBJECTIVES OF 5TH C.I.B.

FIRST OBJECTIVE: BLUE Line: (25th Battn. on the Right and 22nd Battn. on the Left).

CATAPULT Trench from N.V.b.9½.4½. to N.l.d.8½.7. (Northern Divisional Boundary).

FINAL OBJECTIVE: GREEN Line: (24th Battn. on the Right and 25th Battn. on the Left).

Junction of COMMOTION and CARFAX Trenches at N.8.b.2.6. thence along COMMOTION Trench to junction with NUN’S ALLEY, B.8.B. – thence north up NUN’S ALLEY and NORMAN Trench to junction of latter with NEGRO Trench, h.2.b.7.2.

The 1st Canadian Division are having an intermediate objective (RED Line) between the First (BLUE Line) and Final Objective (GREEN Line), along NUN’S ALLEY and BIZAM Trench.

The RED Line will be continued south in our Area along NUN’S ALLEY to junction with NORTHERN Trench, and 25th Battn. will conform with the pause made on the RED Line by the 1st Canadian Division.
