Wong Kong Ying et al
As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths. They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q.2 Did you make any investigation as to how long they had been living there?
A. They had been living there approximately since October 1933. This particular camp contains nine men, Camp #2. Very small building, made of lumber and shake roof. The size would be 18 by 16 feet. The kitchen was out-side, exposed - covered by tent.
Q. 3 Did you take any stock of the provisions?
A. Further I took a sample of the food eaten by Wong Ying; further took a sample of the water - creek running along-side the kitchen; also sample of food at the table uneaten by the men.
Q. 4. Do these Chinamen buy their food direct?
A. We have other evidence as to that. From the information i received there they give their orders to King Faun.
Q.5. Is he the operator of this Camp?
A. These Chinese are sub-contractors. Colquohn is the man who operates these camps.
Q. 6. Colquohn? They have a sub-contract from Colquohn?
A. Yes. We have some other witnesses for direct evidence.

Q. 7 What is your full name?
A. Olive Thomas Simpson.
Q.8 On Thursday last you sent a wire from Sechart to the Provincial Police at Alberni, did you?
A. Yes.
Q. 9 At the time you sent that wire, to your knowledge what was wrong at the camp.
A. I don't know that there was anything particularly wrong, only one of the boys came over and said one of the Chinamen had died.
Q. 10 One of the boys said what?
A. He died on Wednesday; came over on Thursday morning; I went directly to Sechart to wire these people.
