As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- I saw one touching the emergency brake up and down and the police called him away from that? A;- On the bridge? Q;- Did you test it before the jury came down, while they were there or after? A;- While the jury were there. Q;- How did you test the emergency brake while the jury was there? A;- Q;- That was before they took off the casing of the gears. As a matter of fact, the emergency brake was moved up and down when the jury was there? A;- It was moved. Q;- It was pulled back last night? A;- It was pulled back last night. Q;- When you moved that car form the right side of the bridge over to the left side, did you observe that the left side wheel slipped on the bridge, did you see that do that? A;- I was not on the left hand side. Q;- Would you say the emergency brake was in good order on either of these wheels? A;- Could see it wasn't. Q;- Did you examine the condition of this emergency brake? A;- We moved the car with the brake on. Q;- Did you move the car with the brake exactly in the position it was taken out of the water? A;- I- Q;- Did the wheels move? A;- Wheels moved. Mr Jackson;- How long was the car in the water? A;- It went in on Saturday. Q;- It was raised on Monday? A;- Raised on Monday. Q;- There was a kind of slime on the car? A;- Yes. Q;- This slippery mud? A;- Yes. Q;- Don't you think it would have an effect on the emergency brakes? A;- Not in that length of time; it would not.
