As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- You think twice the length of the car? A;- Considerably more if the road was not in a perfect condition. Coroner;- At twelve miles an hour, good car, everything in perfect condition? Stop in two lengths of the car? A;- Yes. Mr Jackson;- What would be the length of this building? Q;- I would have to guess but I would say about a hundred and twenty. I never did say or mention the length of the auto. Coroner;- When you were driving a jitney what speed did you make? you are out of the business? A;- I had no speedometer on my car. Q;- As a rule jitney drivers have no speedometers on the car? A;- I didn't have one. Q;- In a car gong twelve miles an hour if you are not looking at the speedometer doesn't it seem you are not speeding at all? A;- I- Q;- If you are riding in a car and the car going at twelve miles an hour and you are not looking at the speedometer can't you feel you could get out and walk? A;- Q;- In speed the car would seem as fast as a walk? A;- I beg your pardon sir. Q;- Riding in a car. A;- Juror;- When you were driving a a jitney it would be in town? and when you seen a red light in the street are you to pay attention to it? looking out for red lights? A;- You are not looking for it. Q;- If you seen any red lights at the side of the road near at hand would you go past it in the auto? A;- No. Q;- In getting a license to run a jitney did you pass any examination at all? A;- No.
