As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths. They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Coroner;- You didn't examine the car? A;- No, I didn't examine it. Q;- What was the capacity of the car? A;- It was a seven passenger car. Seven passenger car. Q;- If there was twelve or thirteen people in it it would be overloaded? A;- It was quite strong enough a car for the load. It was a very strong car. Q;- Would it be as easily manipulated as with a load of seven passengers? A;- Well, on all heavy loads it would because the car could traction better. Q;- Would it interfere with the emergency in stopping that? A;- Well, no; still on a slippery road, the more weight a car has the further it will slide. Mr Cowan;- What is your business again? A;- Automobile mechanic. Q;- You drove in the city a jitney? A;- Yes, I drove one, and also a Blue Funnel Line in Westminster. Q;- When did you quit the jitney? A;- In October last. Q;- As a matter of fact you run between Vancouver and Westminster A;- Yes. Q;- You have been in your present business since December last? A;- I December. I am operating, sometime repairing cars in the shop. Q;- Before you went in the jitney business what was your occupation? A;- I was working on cars and driving a little on the side line. Q;- You have never served your time as a machinist then? A;- No I am a machinist, not a lathe hand. Q;- And you worked so you looked over the engine? A;- Yes; it was in fair shape. Q;- It was not part of your work to overhaul the brakes? A;- No; it was not my work at all. Q;- But you said that you and Mr Smith had tested the emergency brake? A;- We found locked wheels.
