As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths. They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Mr Ladner;- By the way the emergency brake is not used often? A;- Not very often. Q;- If this car on an average run three times a day to Ladner what would you say as to the emergency brake that you examined in October 15th? Would you say it was not good enough shape the night of the accident, the lining no good? A;- I would not say. Q;- Would you say it was in good shape? A;- I think it was in good shape. Mr Cowan;- I forgot, Mr Hutchison spoke about the footbrake, the footbrake is built to operate by pressure on the outside of the drum? A;- Yes. Q;- But that brake was also second hand? A;- Yes. Q;- Did you notice then or at any time, the difference between footbrake that operated the right wheel and the footbrake operating the left wheel? A;- No, sir. They retracted might have been broken off they were not defective, the defect is in the car. Q;- That would be in october? A;- Yes. Q;- In October you swear that was the only difference between the two? A;- Well how do you mean? Q;- The footbrake operating the right wheel and the footbrake operating the left? A;- Yes. Q;- That is the only difference you swear? A;- Yes, That is no difference; they are about the same. Mr Beck;- The brakes, the footbrake will lock the wheel on that automobile? A;- It will not lock it solid but it will practically slow it down. The footbrake won't have pressure enough to lock it fast to make the wheel drag, but the emergency brake will lock it solid. Q;- You think that in using the footbrake that would lessen the chances of the car skidding?
