As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- Nevertheless you heard what Mr Smith said to you, if you are quite hard of hearing? A;- Yes. I was sitting in the seat next to him Q;- And you heard no noise when the car struck the gate? A;- No- I didn't hear any noise. Coroner;- Was there a light in that car Mr Hutchison? A;- Yes; there was a red light in the car Q;- Would that interfere with the driver seeing ahead? A;- Now I will tell you; there was something wrong with his magnete magnet the light was off once in a while. going out; it would not work very good. I was talking to him coming in about the front light. Q;- Well, you are a machinist? A;- Yes. Q;- What effect would the light in the automobile have on a persons view ahead of him? A;- Well, of course up above, it would have to be a bright light even if you looked, it would hage have to be a bright light to affect your eyes, unless a bright light. Q;- The sign that he had on his car on the windshield would that affect your view from the position he was in? A;- I don't think he could see over that, because he sat. He sat watching the road very closely. Q;- How far could you see the road by the car lights the head lights? How many feet ahead? A;- Well, you could see, I would say thirty feet, something like that.
