As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- How far away? A;- I can't be sure. Q;- Five or six hundred feet? A;- Length and a half of this building to be on the safe side. Q;- In regard to the protections on this bridge when approaching you say you always see these lights? A;- I know. Q;- What is your procedure on a cold frosty night? A;- Break your windshield and pull it half down. Q;- Would you consider it safe driving unless you broke your windshield on a frosty night? A;- No. Mr Beck;- Have you ever noticed the cluster lights of the B.C. Electric terminus at Fraser Avenue? Can you see straight through? Is it possible that the driver might mistake these for that red light cluster and go right through? A;- I don't know about anybody else. Q;- You noticed this red cluster and you knew the bridge was clear? A;- I always go by the gates, I never paid any attention to those lights. Q;- Every night in crossing the bridge you always see these red lights in front of you? A;- I didn't take any notice of those. Q;- And you have been driving there three years? A;- I didn't see it; I didn't pay any attention to it. Q;- A;- That never shows the green light. It's the red light that's on that post; the B.C. Electric. Mr Cowan;- If in the seat with the driver there were at least three men would that hamper his view? A;- I don't know about Smith's car. Q;- Why? A;- Smith's car is an extra wide car, with great wide seats. With Smith's car seat two men in there without crowding at all. Two men could sit beside him. Q;- You don't think he had three men beside him?
