As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Mr Beck;- You have knowledge of a bylaw you are not to exceed eight miles an hour? A;- I have read this since that. Q;- That's bylaw that was read off to you? A;- I can't sweat it is. Q;- I mean this bylaw my learned friend read out, that's the one. Or being published in the gazette that my learned friend speaks of? A;- No. Cowan;- You can see that sign on the bridge? A;- I know there's a sign there and I have read it. Mr Donaghy;- What is the name of the gentleman who mentioned that Smith went into the gate? A;- I believe Mr Phillips mentioned it. He was a partner of the man. Q;- Where does he live? A;- He lives on Mrine Drive. Q;- Where? A;- Next door to Mr Smith's house. Q;- Did he tell you how he caught on her?? A;- I believe he mentioned it. Q;- What kinds of searchlights on this car, electric? A;- No; they were acetylene. Before he had electric and he put these on. Q;- The lights he had on before were they good lights? A;- No; they were not. Q;- What distance will your car, will your car show objects on the highway? A;- I could not like to say in feet. Q;- How far did you see the lights attached to the car in front of you? AQ;- When you are following a car you can see the car a long way ahead of you? Q;- How far away? A;- You can distinguish the car ahead by the red tail light.
