As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

A;- The most part of them. Q;- Where would you be when the car was within thirty feet from the gates? When they reached there would you be on top of the bridge? Could you see the level? Could you see the top of the bridge when the car was thirty feet from the gates? A;- Yes. Q;- I would suggest that from where you were you would not be able to see these gates? A;- I saw these gates. Q;- You were on the bridge, weren't you? A;- Yes. Q;- As a matter of fact you were a hundred and eighty four yards away? Beck;- about how far were you from the gates when you first saw them? You know the length of the bridge? How many yards or feet from the gates when you saw them closed? A;- Saw the gates? Q;- How far could you stand on that bridge and see the gates closed? A;- 180 yards top of the bridge. Q;- You could see these gates closed a hundred and eighty yards away at seven o'clock at night? A;- If its a moonlight night. Q;- You live in this vicinity? A;- Yes Q;- There is a notice on the bridge you are not to exceed a walk, am I right? A;- I don't know about that. Q;- Is there one intended for automobiles and one for horses? A;- I don't know; I haven't anything to do with that bridge. Q;- Have you ever seen an automobile stopped for speeding on that bridge? A;- No. Q;- Have you heard about it? A;- Yes. Q;- Who was it? A;- Mr Dodson told me. Q;- How long have you lived in that vicinity?
