As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- You didn't? A;- No, sir. Juror; About how far did you get on the bridge when the jitney struck the gate? A;- Up on the bridge. Q;- You were up on the bridge when they collided? A;- Yes. Mr Ladner;- How long is the bridge, Mr Johnson? A;- How long? Q;- Yes. A;- I am blessed if I can say. Q;- Is the bridge 25 yards? A;- I guess it is. Q;- Would it be more likely twenty-five feet; twenty-five yards is a long ways isn't it, would it be more near twenty-five feet? A;- About twenty-five feet. Q;- And the car passed you as you went out the gate? A;- Yes. Q;- And when the car went up the bridge you think it would not be going more than fifteen miles an hour? A;- I think it would. Q;- Are you a judge of the rate of speed in cars? Q;- You stood at the gate? Were you at the east side or the west side? A;- West side. Q;- How far is it in your estimation from the top of the approach to these gates? A;- About a hundred and fifty feet I should say. Q;- Now you were able to go these twenty five yards which is seventy-five feet while the car is going a hundred and fifty feet, would that be a proper calculation? It is twenty-five yards from the approach to the gate that's right Mr. Johnson, isn't it? A;- Yes. Q;- You are quite sure from where you are standing you could see the gates? A;- Yes, when I got to the bridge. Q;- You are quite certain? A;- Yes Q;- How much of the gates could you see
