As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- And as it passed you, or about that time, did you look to see if it was quite clear or the light was shining? A;- On the bridge? Q;- Yes. A;- The red light. Q;- A;- Because I thought he was going too fast, before he reached the gate. Q;- You were about the gate, then what did you do? A;- I made haste. Q;- Were you walking or running up the approach? A;- I run up the approach. Q;- And then what happened? A;- I made haste to the end of the bridge to see if the car was in the water. Q;- You hear it go through the gates? A;- Yes. Q;- Did you see the gates? A;- Before the crash? Yes. Q;- The searchlights on the car were good lights were they? A;- Yes. Q;- And you could see the span was open? A;- Yes. Q;- And you say the red lights? A;- Yes Q;- As to noise, as the automobile went down over the bridge did you hear any particular noise? A;- I heard Mr Dodson shouting, calling to Mr Mitchell to bring his boat. Q;- What did you do? A;- I went to Mr Mitchells house? Q;- And then what did you do? A;- I went on the bridge. Q;- The people in the water could you see them? A;- No. Q;- You didn't see anybody in the water? A;- No; I didn't see nobody in the water. Q;- Before the jitney crashed into the gates did you hear any shouting? A;- I was not close enough.
