As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

expression? A;- I don't remember. Q;- Was it a man's voice, or a woman's voice? A;- I think it was a man's voice. It sounded like a man's voice. Q;- Were you going about fifteen miles an hour do you think? Q;- You know that the approach to that bridge has quite a bump there? A;- Yes. Q;- Going up that incline you are going rather slow? Did the car appear to go much faster or a little slower up that incline? A;- It speeded up a little, not very much. Q;- Have you any recollection when the car went over, after the car collided, you have no recollections of the bottom of the car touching anything? A;- No. Q;- Have you any idea when the auto went out if the back wheels went down head first, or did it incline when it struck the bottom? A;- No. Q;- Have you any means of knowing how you got out of the bus? A;- No, no. Q;- In the backseat? A;- No. Q;- Did you have to struggle? A;- Struggled more or less. Q;- Do you recollect whether you tore the top or whether it was broken behind you? A;- My only recollection is after it struck the bottom, the sudden stop threw us forward again.
