As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q;- You heard a rattle when the car struck the gate? A;- Of course I felt a jar when the car struck the gate. Q;- Did you notice any change in the speed of the car on the bridge? A;- On the bridge? Q;- Yes. A;- Before reaching the gate? Q;- Witness, when the car came on the bridge you didn't notice any change of speed than on the road? A;- Have to slow down coming up the bridge for that reason. Q;- The auto commenced to pick up speed after you got on the bridge? A;- Yes Mr Cowan;- There were three in the seat you were sitting on? A;- Three in the seat. Q;- Back seat? A;- Back seat. Q;- You were in the centre? A;- I was in the center. Q;- And just in front of you were two stools or chairs in between these? A;- Yes. Q;- There were three grown people sitting on these? A;- Grown people? Q;- The person immediately in front of you was a large man? A;- Well, he appeared to me. Q;- That accounts for the fast that you didn't see? A;- Yes. Q;- You couldn't see without getting to one side or getting up? A;- No. Q;- As a matter of fact you could not see the child? A;- No. Q;- The man immediately in front of you held on his knee a child? A;- Yes. Q;- And the lady held or on her knees was another child? A;- Yes. Q;- So that there were eight people in the back part of the car? A;- Yes. Q;- So that the rest were in the driver's seat? A;- Yes.
