As part of the Chinese Historical Wrongs Legacy Initiative, we’ve digitized a small selection of inquests and inquiries from 1872 to 1934, found in series GR-0431. These were chosen to reflect the experiences of early Chinese immigrants to B.C. – their living and working conditions, and their unfortunate accidental or unusual deaths.   They range from a woman working in a brothel in Barkerville who died of natural causes to three sawmill workers who died from malnutrition. Learn more.

Q; - What light suspended, a light like that when it is dropped shows from the opening portion?

A; - The white.

Q; - The cord suspending the white from this mast level how far is that, about three feet?

A; - I could not -

Coroner; - It is kind of rigged up on a couple of lines?

A; - They are on to these lines, fastened on to the end of the lamp.

Q; - This evening they were not? A; - Yes, unless they got out as soon as I came away.

Q; - Was there any wind that night?

A; - No, sir; It was a still night.

Q; - Mr Smith, you know has the reputation of being a careful driver?

A; - I have not heard that, sir.

Q; - When you warned him, did you stop him to warn him?

A; - I was talking to him at the foot of the bridge.

Q; - You stopped him did you?

A; - He was fixing his motor at the end of the bridge.

Q; - How long ago was that?

A; - I don't know.

Q; - Was he the only one you warned?

A; - There was another man.

Q; - Any other automobiles? A; - No.

Q; - Have you ever seen him driving over the bridge but in the center of the bridge coming towards you?

A; - Where there's too much traffic.

Q; - Have you ever been in a position where you could stand off at one side and see him pass you?

A; - Well, I have been on the protection piers.

Q; - Do you recollect these specific times? A; - No.

Q; - When you have observed the rate of his speed, was either the car was coming towards you or going straight from you?
