War news. French capture whole of Maurepas. Further British advance toward Thiepval; across the Salient and on the eastern end & NE edges of Delville Wood. Zeppelin raid on E & SE coasts no casualties. Zepp raid on Greenwich - guns & searchlights heard & seen from here. Official 9 killed - but minimized.
92 officers casualties 5077 other ranks. Bad night & worse day. Word from Maj. Eady that he cannot issue orders for my re-boarding. Heavy rainstorm.
August 25 - Bulgarians enter Kavala. British armed boarding-steamer Duke of Albany torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by German submarine. Air raid on East and South-East coasts by five or six Zeppelins, one of which reaches outskirts of London; 29 casualties.
To Loughton - Epping forest with Elsie Gill - wonderful beach & fern hill slope - return by bus - grand search light display.
August 26 - British take another 200 yards of German trench north of Bazentin-lePetit. Serbian progress in the Ostrova district. General Moschopoulos appointed Chief of Greek General Staff in place of General Dousmanis.
