Segregation Camp 1st Canadian Reserve [?] Seaford Sussex My dear Mother I have wanted to get a line off before, but have been in such an unsettled state since my arrival that I have not been able to manage it yet. I have also wanted to be able to tell you something definite about my chances of getting attached to a Reserve [?] here, all I can say at present is that my chances look pretty slim & I seem to be fairly up against it. Apparently a new order has come out that all officers who have not already been overseas, who come over with drafts from Canada, have got to return almost immediately or else I believe revert to the ranks. Of course I can't bear the idea of returning to Canada as a "conducting officer" when I know my services could be better utilized, & I also don't altogether relish the thought of going into the ranks with the class of men these days. It was a different [?] some time ago. I am doing all I can of course to get something. I have wired to Uncle Tom to try & get me into the Imperials & have hopes that something may come of it, but it seems very hard to get any satisfaction anywhere these days.
