sort in either English or French have been removed from shop windows or signs. The "Cafe de Paris" for instance has become "Cafe Germania" 'English Spoken" has been scratched off all shop windows, etc.

Aug 8. A peculiar Sunday like stillness is very noticable now. Very little singing or cheering to be heard. Troops being fitted out in different parts of the city. Trains running about every 15 minutes only, with conductors often not in uniform. Motor busses have ceased running. Not many droschkes & few autos save those in use by authority for military service. A few letters & cards were delivered
