I got pretty homesick, but everybody is in the same boat, so we didn't talk about home by general consent, the topic wasn't mentioned. Did Celle spend Xmas with the Ballantynes? I have received only one letter from her the mail service is rotten. No letters from the office; no replies to three cables I sent; no reply to a wire requesting information, from Paris. We're practically cut off from the world. Yesterday some of our officers received letters written from Paris, of date November 11 just 5 [15] days coming from Paris, a distance of about two hundred miles. However, perhaps the thing will improve and it will not be so damned lonely. I wouldn't miss what I've gone through the past three weeks for ten tears added to my life. I shall not begin to tell you about it all can't be done. But the outstanding fact of all is the reception we hace received from the Boches. We still wonder over it; cannot get it at all. On Christmas morning, each of us at the General's house found a bottle of wine, decorated with holly and ribbons and a merry Christmas card on his dressing table, from the owner of this chateau and his family. love to the Ballantynes and the Lownsbroughs.
